Apply for recognition as a medical technologist for veterinary medicine with professional qualifications from third countries

Would you like to work in Germany as a veterinary medical technologist? You can have your professional qualification from a third country officially recognized.

Detailed description

If you wish to pursue a career as a veterinary medical technologist in Germany, you must have your foreign professional qualifications recognized by the state.
Even if you have a professional qualification from a so-called third country, you can obtain state permission from the responsible authority in Germany.

Please note

If there are significant differences between your foreign professional qualification and your German professional qualification, you may be able to compensate for the differences through your professional experience, other knowledge or skills (lifelong learning).

However, it may be that the essential differences cannot be compensated for by this knowledge. In this case, the competent authority will inform you of the essential differences between your foreign professional qualification and the German professional qualification. They will also explain why you cannot compensate for these essential differences.

The responsible authority will also tell you about compensatory measures you can take to offset the significant differences.

There are various compensatory measures:

  • Adaptation period: The adaptation period lasts a maximum of 3 years.
  • Knowledge test: The knowledge test assesses your knowledge in specific subjects and areas. The knowledge test consists of an oral and a practical part.

You can usually choose between an adaptation period or a knowledge test. If you successfully complete the adaptation period and meet all other requirements, you will be authorized to use the professional title "Medical Technologist for Veterinary Medicine" or "Medical Technologist for Veterinary Medicine."

The permit procedure also includes an assessment of equivalence (recognition procedure). You can request a separate notification of the assessment results.

As a late repatriate, you can choose to undergo the recognition process either under the laws listed here or under the Federal Expellees Act. You can decide for yourself. The responsible authority will advise you on which procedure is best for you.

Different rules apply to professional qualifications from the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland.
